Branstad Names JoAnn Johnson Superintendent of the Iowa Division of Credit Unions

(DES MOINES) – Gov. Terry E. Branstad today announced that JoAnn Johnson will serve as superintendent of the Iowa Division of Credit Unions (IDCU) in the Branstad-Reynolds administration.

“I am pleased to announce that JoAnn Johnson, an individual with exceptional qualifications, will head the Iowa Division of Credit Unions,” said Branstad. “JoAnn’s service as Chairman of the Board of the National Credit Union Administration will serve her well as she works to provide a safe regulatory climate for credit unions and their members.”

The IDCU is charged with protecting the interests of credit union members and shareholders. The superintendent of credit unions supervises, controls and enforces laws, rules and regulations pertaining to credit unions.

“I want to thank Governor Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds for giving me the opportunity to serve the people of Iowa in this capacity,” said Johnson. “I will work tirelessly to ensure that the interests of the more than 785,000 members of Iowa credit unions are protected through thorough analysis and evaluation.”

Gov. Branstad named Johnson the superintendent of IDCU after receiving the resignation of the current superintendent, James Forney, on Tuesday, February 8, 2011. Johnson will serve the remainder of Forney’s term which ends April 30, 2011. Gov. Branstad has submitted Johnson’s name for confirmation as superintendent of IDCU for a four year term beginning May 1, 2011.

Johnson was elected to the Iowa State Senate in 1994 and served as chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee for four years, and the Senate Commerce Committee for one year. She was appointed to the National Credit Union Administration in 2002 and served as chairman of the agency from 2004-2008. As chairman, Johnson oversaw a $150 million dollar budget and was responsible for the day to day operation of 950 agency staff.

Johnson holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Education from University of Northern Iowa. JoAnn and her husband, Brian, reside in Panora, Iowa. JoAnn has two grown children.
